Sammanfattning: Abstract Purpose Middle managers role within the public sector is constantly changing while it is also them who must ensure that changes are implemented. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the middle managers in the context of change management. Method Six middle managers in the public sector were interviewed about their experiences regarding the role associated with the change process. They all work at the same hospital. Results The results shows that the role of the change process involves interpretation at different levels. Middle-managers interpret what, how and why the changes should be implemented to be able to perform and maintain the change. Time and support are important factors in the process. Final discussion The final discussion investigates the interpretation process and the need of facilities. This paper presents two conclusions regarding the role of middle managers in the context of change. 1. Need of tools in the phase of undertaking personal change. 2. Lack of tools affects the result in the interpretation phase of undertaking personal change. Keywords: Organizational change, middle-managers, role, sencemaking, interpretation.
