Sammanfattning: This study has investigated upper secondary school teachers' perception of the purpose of news in social studies teaching both from the point of view of function and objectives and from teachers' subject conception. Four social science teachers have been interviewed, and the teachers' statements about their goals, content and methods have been analyzed based on scientific and politically normative goals to identify and categorize their subject conception. Subsequently, the relationship between their subject conception and the purpose of news in teaching has been examined. The result shows a consensus between the teachers that the function of news in teaching serves to concretize the social studies subject's more abstract and difficult-to-relate theories, to give the subject a topical connection, and to broaden students' perspective and understanding of society both nationally and internationally. In addition, there is a consensus that news is perceived as both content and method in teaching and is used differently depending on the teaching context. Moreover, the purpose of news to convey these scientific and political normative goals differs between teachers depending on their understanding of the subject.
