Sammanfattning: The current study is an exploration of how the urban dance music scene in the local student nation life in Uppsala can be understood from the theoretical perspective of neo-tribes. Furthermore, the role of self-identity is explored among the members, in this process. A number of interviews were transcribed and analysed together with observations and media. The theoretical framework that is applied in the interpretation is Maffesolis concept of tribus and Hetheringtons neo-tribes, together with Giddens concept self-identity. In the study the role of mainstream clubs and hit music was found to play the part as “the Other” in the driving forces for the formation of the neo-tribe, and also the placement of the locality at the alternative club. This process played an important part in bringing the interviewees together and also was important in the formation of self-identity of the interviewees as DJ:s, with different emotional aspects driving them, and with the interplay between the global and the local contributing to their different music preferences.
