Sammanfattning: Schools play a big part in the work of reaching a gender equal society, and teachers generally do the main part of the work. A part of the central content in the curriculum describes that education in Civics and social studies should contain knowledge on questions like power, democracy and gender equality. Research shows that there are differences in how schools and individual teachers work with content like gender equality. This study researches how high school teachers who teach Civics and social studies interpret theirs and the school’s mission as intermediaries of gender equality. Furthermore, the purpose is to advance knowledge of teachers experience of working with gender equality, both regarding the content of their teaching and the approach towards pupils. Qualitative interviews with eight Civics teachers in high school have been accomplished in order to meet this aim. The study shows that the interviewed teachers have great knowledge both when it comes to interpreting the concept of gender equality and educating about it. The results also show that the schools where the participants work do not have the same knowledge and commitment when it comes to these types of questions. It shows the continuing challenges that still exist when it comes to succeeding with gender mainstreaming high schools.
