Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to explore how professionals in social work act when meeting adolescents with drug problems. By interviewing different professionals within social work we intend to broaden our knowledge of methods used in these cases. This study analyzes these views from an action theory perspective. Through this analysis, we wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how and why professionals take certain actions the way they do and if these actions are derived from evidence- based methods and tools. We discuss the different professionals view on their discretion and if they experience any limitations due to discretion in their work. This study also addresses the role of risk factors in the drug prevention work. The result shows that empathy and motivating interview are the most common tools. The professionals strive to create a trustful and safe relation to the adolescent which will make it easier for the latter to open up and talk about his/her problems. The result also shows that the professionals might feel limited in their discretion concerning legislation. This mostly depends on the specific profession. Lastly, we discuss common mistakes professionals make in the drug prevention work with adolescents. With this combined knowledge we hope to contribute to the development of the drug prevention work as conducted today.
