Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: Surrogacy arrangements is becoming an increasingly more common way to create a family. Due to this, the method is getting a greater focus in the media where people is questioning the procedures ethics. The aim of this study was to examine how surrogacy arrangements is constructed in Swedish daily press, with focus on normality in the following themes: family formation, motherhood and children’s rights. The method chosen for our study was a qualitative content analysis of thirteen different articles in Swedish daily press. In analyzing our results, we applied social constructionism theory as a framework, and examined the concept of normality by claims-making theory. We found in our study that certain opinions where frequent in the articles, where there was a distinct negative or positive view on the method. The claims that were positive to the arrangements focused on everyone’s right to build a family and often related to LGBT-families and their expanded rights. The negative articles were more focused on the exploitation of financial vulnerable women and the lack of regulations of surrogacy children’s rights. Conclusively, surrogacy arrangements is an ongoing controversial discussion that challenges our views on dignity, ethics and kinship. We believe that our study has contributed to the research about surrogacy arrangements since we illustrated the construction of the phenomenon in daily press.
