Sammanfattning: During the early 1800 century it was common for several family members to work at the same workplace. Child labour was nothing unusual in the early British factories. This bachelor study focuses on the part of the world that underwent industrialization first; the British Isles. The purpose of this paper is to give a snapshot of the household economy in the early 1830’s, when agrarian society turned into an industrial society, by studying the people who lived during this process. With the urbanization and the changes to work organisation, the older conceptions of labour division within the family was challenged. This study shows in line with some previous reaches that the importance of the households persisted throughout the period. It is also concluded that the economic conditions of the British working households could vary greatly. Poverty could occasionally be very palpable and often more than one person was needed to contribute to the income of the household. The employer quite often had a great influence over the family life.
