Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to explore residential care home managers' view on parents' involvement in the treatment of their children and adolescents when placed in an out of home care facility. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with three managers of Swedish residential care homes for children and adolescents. For the analysis, Systems Theory was applied. The study showed that the managers understood parents' participation in the context of out of home care, in two main ways. Firstly, parents' participation was seen as a way of upholding a relationship between the parent and the child, primarily by maintaining continued contact between them. Secondly, parents' participation was defined as the parent being involved in the child’s residential care home treatment, in such a way that the parent gained a deeper understanding of the child's complex of problems. In terms of Systems Theory these modes of participation were interpreted as that the two systems were either connected or not. In some cases, the child was described as finding themself having to cater to two opposing and strictly bounded systems, the family system and the treatment system, thus stuck in a dilemma of loyalty. The assignment given to the residential care home by its governing authority, which outlines the objectives of every child's placement, was perceived to not take parents' participation into account. In terms of Systems Theory this is analysed as levels and hierarchies within and between systems affecting the manager’s room for maneuver. The study showed that the perceived reasons behind parents not being involved may vary, from the parents not wanting to participate on the basis of preserving a balanced structure of the family system, to parents facing mental obstacles due to negative feelings of having abandoned their child, and social stigma.
