Sammanfattning: The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to study the European Union's different approaches in the management of the Temporary Protection Directive, during the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2022. Previous research has criticized the long process that the directive requires for activation and that the EU uses it for a symbolic policy that is not meant to be used in practice. Despite that, the directive was activated in 2022, as a result of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. This thesis contributes with a new perspective in the comparison of the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2022, with an activated directive. Solidarity is a multidimensional concept that lacks a definition in migration and asylum research. This thesis will apply solidarity as a theoretical concept with a normative approach. Presented in three dimensions of solidarity: Rational Reflexive Solidarity, Self-Centred Solidarity, and Recognitive Solidarity. The method was conducted using text analysis in the form of content analysis. The used material is four texts related to the European Union. The result shows that there were legitimate reasons for both activation as well as not to activate the directive in 2015. This demonstrates three identified themes that distinguish the refugee crises: European identity, type of aggression, and geographical vicinity. The conclusion is that the European Union uses self-centered solidarity in the management of the temporary protection directive in 2015 and 2022.
