Sammanfattning: Theoretical findings show that only 25 percent of manufacturing companies in major industrialized countries like the US, Canada and Germany use process and cycle time management to streamline operations. In this thesis, the main purpose is to clarify the importance of continuous measurements and analyzes of cycle times, by highlighting different relations between cycle time management and the performance of a production system. Furthermore, the purpose is to show how updated cycle times can be achieved and maintained in the long term. The purpose can be explained by the fact that today it is important for a high level of competitiveness in the manufacturing industry to remain in the global market. Previous research shows that performance requirements: quality, cost, delivery capability and flexibility are the most important performance requirements and have a significant impact on corporate competitiveness. The thesis shows that cycle time management is linked to these four performance requirements. As a guide to the research study, questions were formulated: Question 1: What wastes can be detected by cycle time analysis, and how do these affect the performance of a production system? Question 2: How should manufacturing companies design processes that will improve the handling of cycle times? To accomplish the purpose, theory was gathered through a literature study. Parallel with the literature study, a case study was conducted. The case study was conducted at a Swedish global manufacturing company. At the company a number of unstructured interviews and a structured interview were conducted. Observations and meetings have also been conducted. The case study included a cycle-time analysis of the production processes in the production line, where the focus was on cycle time sampling and analysis of disturbances. Data collected by the case company was also provided. This data, for example, related to standard times and quantities. The case company has gone from functional layout to process layout. However, it appears in the study that the production line was not utilized appropriately, which meant that resource use was higher than planned. The study shows that continuous measurements of cycle times not only highlights incorrect cycle times, but also highlight disturbances and poor quality, which are not of value to the customer. Through the knowledge of errors and disturbances, a real cycle time can then be achieved. Which is of great importance, since cycle time is an important basic parameter in planning workforce and pricing to customers. In order for companies to successfully carry out continuous measurements and accurate analyzes, the study provides a model for process design.
