Sammanfattning: Abstract Authors: Mia Lunderot and Rebecka Sandberg Title: “It might be more safe not to listen at all”- A study of how pedophiles are portrayed in media Supervisor: Charlotta Zettervall Assessor: Mats Hilte The aim with this study was to analyze and describe how pedophiles are portrayed in Swedish media. We wanted to look further into the way that media describe who the pedophile really is and which consequences of pedophilia that are portrayed. We also wanted to look into which measures that are being used for the phenomenon. As future social workers we realize the importance to highlight how media describe social phenomenons and in this case we wanted to critically examine how media describe the specific crimes and characteristics of the pedophile. Our study was based on articles from two well-known Swedish newspapers Kvällsposten, Expressen/GT and the Swedish news agency TT, during a period of three years (2007-2010). To analyze and work with our text we choose text analysis as our method. The main result of the study was that pedophiles often are described in media as monsters and freaks who are heartless and manipulative. The analysis showed that media stigmatize the pedophile in the way they portray this group of people in the articles that we have analyzed.
