Bilden av boken: Den fysiska boken som inredningsdetalj och livsstilsmarkör
Sammanfattning: This essay focuses on the different functions of the physical book. It discusses the material and aesthetic aspects by examining how the book is portrayed in different kinds of lifestyle- and interior magazines. E-books and the expansion of digital technology have made the pessimists talk of the near end of printed books, but at the same time, books seem to have a secure place in our homes. They have become a symbol for education and cultural capital. This thesis aims to explore the strength of the printed book, the uses we have for it other than reading, and how it is going to survive in the ongoing digital era. By examining how the physical book is displayed in lifestyle- and home interior magazines, and applying the theories of Bourdieu and Material Culture Studies, this thesis concludes that the physical book has a very strong place in our homes as to various uses other than reading. Books are a cultural symbol that expresses the owners class and social status, while they at the same time are able to create a homey presence. They are not likely to be outconquered by the e-book any time soon.
