Sammanfattning: Parental support is support which is provided on a universal, selective and indicated level. The support efforts are carried out at societal level by professional people who work strategically with parental support. Examples of professionals who work strategically with parental support are actors at family center, open custody of children and family and parent groups, area of ​​support and treatment, and family care. Parental support is important in preventing ill-health and promoting good upbringing and development for the child. Parental support means the parents' support for their children in general and also the support that the municipality / region provides to parents. Therefor the purpose for the work of parenting support is to help the parents' in their mission to meet the varying needs of the child. Parental support's work in Sweden relates to the content of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The work is also based on a national strategy developed by the Government Offices and the Ministry of Social Affairs in Sweden. The strategy includes three main goals and three subgoals. The main goals emphasizing the importance of; a knowledge-based approach, accessibility support and a supportive organization. The sub-goals emphasize; collaboration at all levels of society, increased numbers of health-promoting arenas and evidence-based working methods. Work on parental support is also based on political decisions, where development opportunities are governed by higher-level actors. The study examines what needs for parental support that professionals in Västmanland County experience today, and to examine how existing efforts respond to these needs. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews, based on a targeted selection, has been chosen to answer the purpose, in which people working with parental support questions participated. These individuals are presented as professionals in the present study. A manifest content analysis was used to analyze collected material. The result shows that the needs within the parental support relate to different problem areas and can affect the parents' needs as well as the child's. Hence, forms of support are offered that create supportive environments for these groups. There is a need to provide parental support to parents with cultural background differences in order to improve matching of support to perceived needs. Difficult social circumstances are also a factor that can make it difficult for the support to match the need.
