Sammanfattning: The change in Swedish schools through movies – A study on how movies used as a historical source material can show how the teacher role, the student role and the relationship between teachers and students have changed through a historical perspective. The focus of this study is to use movies as historical source material to show a change in the teacher role, student role, and the relationship between students and teachers through a historical perspective. The purpose of the study was to see if it is able to see any changes in the teacher role, student role, and the relationship between students and teachers through a historical perspective by using movies as historical source material. The questions I have answered in this study were: How is the role of the teacher portrayed over time? How is the role of the student portrayed over time? How is the role of the relationship between the teacher and the student portrayed over time? The method used in this study to answer these questions was done by conducting a film analysis. By using a film analysis, I could divide the teacher role, the student role and the relationship between the teachers and the students into categories, where they were later analysed further. The movies that were studied were “Swing it magistern!” from 1940, ”Ole dole doff” from 1968, and ”Vikarien” from 2006. The results of the study showed that the power of the teacher was reduced the further along we went in time. We could also see by studying the movies that the role of the student was changed as well. The students’ influence in school became more powerful the further along we went in time. This was attributed to the democratization of the society in Sweden. According to the study, the relationships between the teachers and the students’ were better in the early movies, to then gradually becoming worse through time when the teachers lost their authoritative power and the students’ got more influence in the schools.
