Sammanfattning: In society, accidents happen on a daily basis. To investigate these accidents is part of preventing them from happening at all. The investigations are carried out by different reasons and with different focus as well as by varying methods and extent. This contributes to that the finding of causes of the event varies with the investigator as well as with what the purpose of the investigation is as well as what method is being used. The purpose of this thesis was therefor to contribute with knowledge as to how investigations are carried out within different sectors in society. A content analysis, split into two parts, were conducted in order to examine the layout of the investigations as well as the identified causes. The two parts were then combined and complemented with theories to explain why they were identified and others not. From this analysis, it has become apparent that not all actors use a method when investigating accidents. In the case they did, the one most occurring is MTO-analysis. It is therefore hard to say what impact another method would have made on the identified causes. What could be said, however, is that clear guidelines combined with a certain method have resulted in cases both larger in number as well as on higher levels.
