Investigation of Impact Parameter Profiles in Multi-Parton Interactions
Sammanfattning: The purpose of this thesis was to implement an alternative method to calculate the overlap function, which describe to what extent two protons overlap with each other spatially, into PYTHIA8 in order to determine how it affected the average number of multiparton interactions. The new overlap function is based on an explicit impact parameter picture, whereas PYTHIA8s overlap function uses an implicit impact parameter picture. This new overlap function was calculated using the Glauber formalism, as well as the Good-Walker formalism, both used by the Angantyr model, and by identifying appropriate terms in the overlap function that PYTHIA8 used. Using this new overlap function, simulations were run to compare the new overlap to default PYTHIA8 and default Angantyr. Despite the new overlap function being unintuitive, the results show that it is potentially viable once it has been tuned to data, and when decisions have been made regarding some parameterisations in the new overlap function.
