Sammanfattning: Since reunification with The People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong and Macau have tried to get a new national identity. By applying Michael Billigs theories of banal nationalism in each region’s Policy Address introduction chapters written by each of the Chief Executive’s in the two regions a national identity is discerned. The analysis has been made on all Policy Address’es published between 1997 and 2011. Hong Kong's national identity is characterized by a rejection of China and a rhetoric that is keen about the community in the specific region. Hong Kong see itself with a lot of different identities. Macau's national identity seeks the Chinese identity, but are somewhat anxious to distance themselves from China. Macau consider themselves to belong to China, more than Hong Kong, but both regions are keen to try to bring up their own national identity. In their use of latent words its possible to see that both Hong Kong and Macau see theirself as parts of pan-China.
