Tolka mig rätt - en litteraturstudie om tvärkulturella möten inom vården
Sammanfattning: Background: As a result of war, violence and persecution, thousands of people are forced to flee their own countries every day. A large number of those are crossing the Mediterranean to Europe. This means that nurses will meet an increasing number of people from other countries, with different language and complex needs of care. In order to provide equitable health care to the entire population, according to the Swedish health care law, it’s required that nurses possess good cultural competence and awareness of the factors affecting the cross- cultural encounters in health care. Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight factors that influence the encounter between nurses and patients who do not speak the same language. Method: A literature review based on 13 scientific articles. Findings: Three themes was identified; Language barriers, Cultural differences and Lack of knowledge. Communication and language barriers prove to be the most common obstacle in cross-cultural encounters in health care. Conclusion: To overcome these barriers, nurses should be educated in communication strategies and cultural competence in order to increase their knowledge. More professional interpreters are also requested.
