Sammanfattning: Background and problem discussion: In the transition to a circular economy, there needs to be a change in the approach of how companies use resources and manage their waste. A great responsibility lies with the companies that contribute to the generation of waste. Through collaboration and being a part of an industrial symbiosis network, companies can reduce their waste. Prior studies of industrial networks show material flows and the importance of developing trust among the actors involved. This trust, together with other conditions, can underpin and have an embedded impact on a company's design of the network. At the same time, each network is unique with its own set of conditions and context. On the west coast of Sweden, there is a relatively newly established symbiosis network that is yet to be explored, regarding social structures and network functions that shape the interaction between actors.Purpose: This essay aims to extend the knowledge about the social elements of an industrial symbiosis network within the framework of embeddedness. This by firstly identifying characteristics of embeddedness within the industrial symbiosis network in Sotenäs and secondly by examining what functions these features have in shaping an industrial symbiosis network. The research questions of the thesis read: "What characteristics of embeddedness can be identified in the industrial symbiosis network in Sotenäs?" and "What functions do these characteristics have in shaping the industrial symbiosis network in Sotenäs?"Methodology: A case study has been carried out through a qualitative research method with an explorative approach. This has been done through an abductive approach to fulfill the purpose and answer the posed research questions. Data has been collected through eight semi-structured interviews with company representatives and municipal employees to give an in depth picture of the problem.Conclusions: Features of trust, joint problem solving and information transfers are identified in the symbiosis network of Sotenäs. These features also have a role in shaping the outcomes of the network. These different outcomes include increased flexibility, efficiency, innovation, pareto optimality, new collaboration opportunities and better waste management.
