Finding Direction. En etnologisk studie av One Direction-fans förhandlingar av identitet, genus och sexualitet.
Sammanfattning: The One Direction fandom has been a source for a lot of discussion in different media, where fans, also known as Directioners, have been viewed as crazy, fanatic and also said to send deaththreats. This (n)ethnographic study investigates how these media narratives shape fans in the formings of their identities, and also how it effects them when participating in the fandom. This study also analyses codes for sexuality and gender in Larry-fanfiction - homoerotic novels starring two of the band members. What do the narratives in these two stories tell us about Larry-shippers perspective of e.g. sexuality and femininity? This study is done through a qualitive research, based on interviews with three former fans, and also on two fanfiction’s with comment boards. As a support for my analysis I’ve used Beverley Skeggs’ respectability-theory and also Ernest Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s critical discourse theory. The results shows that fans are strongly aware of the stereotype of the Directioner when they take part in the fandom, and it can also keep them from participating fully. The sterotype of a Directioner is also connected to the figure of a fangirl, which is shaped by constructed believes of women’s media consumption as less cultivated. When it comes to the reading of Larry-fanfiction, this study shows that the stories and their readers are part in confronting and shaping norms of sexuality and masculinity, but that views of bad/good femininity is still discussed and enacted within the community.
