Digital kompetensutveckling: Intention och digital kompetens i folkbibliotekets internutbildning
Sammanfattning: Digital literacy has become increasingly important. It's often linked to concepts like the information society, which we use to understand the complex changes in ways we socially and economically organize and run society today. The public library is faced with the task of ensuring that the professional skills of their workforce are in line with what is expected – and also interpreting what is expected. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of how the public librarian perceives their role in the function of strengthening citizen's digital literacy, and provide insight into how this informs professional development activities. A case study of the in-house educational program of a Swedish midsized public library has been conducted. The study is based on a sociocultural approach with Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger’s conceptual framework of communities of practice in focus. Conclusions drawn in this study is that librarians understand the demands on their own digital literacy development through the needs of the library's users. They view their work with citizen's digital literacy development in a broader democratizing perspective, and as partially compensatory. The librarian incorporate an understanding of the societal implications of digitalization in the concept of digital literacy – this is shown in the broad approach to subject in the content of the in-house educational program. Beyond developing digital literacy skills within the organisation, the intention was to bridge the boundaries between the digital and physical library thorough contextual understanding of digitalization.
