Skolsköterska – en nyckelroll för elever med psykisk ohälsa
Sammanfattning: Background: Mental health problems among children is a growing problem worldwide. Research shows that preventive measures in school can decrease mental health problems among students. By having regular health discussions and examinations, the school nurse is in a position to early identify students with mental health problems.Aim: The aim of this study was to describe school nurses’ experiences in working with mental health problems among school children.Method: The method chosen for this study was a systematic literature review with a mixed method. Searches for articles were performed in the following databases: CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. The chosen articles were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: Three main themes emerged as a result from the study which showed the meaning of a good relationship between the school nurse and the student, the school nurse’s experience of being limited at work and the school nurse’s ability to have a holistic perspective. These main themes resulted in different sub-themes. The results show that school nurses have a willingness to work with mental health problems among students, but they experience limitations in their work. A well-functioning collaboration with other professions within the school and with institutions outside the school regarding the work related to mental health problems was a clear factor for success. However, school nurses experienced difficulties in the collaboration and wished for an improvement regarding this matter. Conclusion: The school nurse has a key role in working with mental health problems among students. Despite this, work regarding mental health problems is not a priority. The school nurse needs more resources in the form of education and time to be able to meet the students’ increased needs.
