När man blir feminist. En kvalitativ studie om erfarenheter och upplevelser av att identifiera sig som man och feminist
Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of self-identified male feminists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight male feminists of which five interviews were included in the present study. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to analyse the data and five main themes were found; insight, responsibility, reflexivity, differentiation and male emancipation. The participants described discovering feminism as a painful insight, a journey of self-examination and feelings of being responsible for the entire group of men. The participants reported experiences of forcing one self to always be on probation, the need to think before one speaks and to be certain of not using un-earned privileges. Even though the feminist journey was described as a struggle, the participants emphasised it as given, like something irreversible that they would not like to undo. The participants described feminism as liberating for them as men, and the possibility of living more free and true to oneself. This is in accordance with previous research that has shown that violations to ones moral conviction and social identity are important for engaging in social action. The result contributes to a qualitative understanding and multidisciplinary knowledge to a predominantly quantitative research field.
