Sammanfattning: Freedom is what many people consider to be the core element in the arab spring. Freedom from oppression and freedom to act without restrictions. The uprisings escalated from a growing disapproval of state governance in the Middle East and North Africa. Through demonstrations an opposition managed to remove the leader of a state, like Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and Ben Ali in Tunisia. The story had quite a different apporach in Libya. Muammar al-Gaddafi was a stubborn man who refused to leave his post as head of state and dictator of the libyan people. A national transitional council together with a western coalition with the intention of protecting civilians eventially managed to find Gaddafi, who’s life ended pretty ugly. Through the eyes of the human rights organizations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch I have deepened in the Libyan freedom of expression, freedom of press and freedom of association during the years 2009-2012. How have Gaddafi, the revolution and the intervention affected the libyan people’s freedom and what is the hope for future freedom? My question formulation is the following: How has the libyan people’s right to freedom of expression, freedom of press and freedom of association evolved during the last years according to Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch?
