A study about conflict in youth institutions. [Translated title] Supervisor: Lars B. Ohlsson Assessor: Elizabeth Martinell Barfoed Conflicts are by no means unusual in society today and we were interested in how conflicts was managed in youth institutions were young people with issues live together. The purpose of this study was to examine how youth institutions handle conflicts that occur during the treatment. The study was based on qualitative method using a semi - constructed interview guide and interviews were made with nine social workers, who worked in these youth institutions. The interviews focused on a professional stand point in order to collect information on conflicts and how social workers in youth institutions solved these conflicts. The analysis was done using a theoretical framework, systems theory. To get further knowledge and understanding of the subject, previous research was also presented. The results showed that it was important to handle the conflicts when they appeared and if this was not possible it was important to confront the adolescents when possible. We also found that if you place young people with issues together, it's bound to trigger conflicts. Conflicts were also found between social workers and adolescents, mostly about the rules of the institutions. The social workers often used conflicts as a learning experience for the adolescents in order to teach them conflict management.
