Sammanfattning: This paper explores the news media discourse that followed after the fatal shooting of Karolin Hakim in Malmö August 2019. Her death was in the early stages connected to gang-related violence and received significant media coverage. This discourse analysis examines news articles from the initial news reporting, and throughout the rest of 2019.The theoretical framework is anchored in post-colonial theory, applying the concepts of othering and racialization to analyze the texts. Feminist perspectives on the cultural politics of emotions, and the ways cultural and national values are inscribed on bodies, are also used, addressing the interplay of gender, class and ethnicity in relation to the news media’s construction of both Karolin Hakim and gang-criminals. The main findings are that Karolin Hakim, through her motherhood and medical profession is ascribed cultural values complying to notions of Swedishness. Therefore, incorporating her into an “us”, while the news media’s racialization of gang-criminals, through the construction of otherness, results in a subordinate “them”. This is strengthened by ethnically diverse and deprived areas being deemed responsible for gang-criminality, ignoring the relation between spatial inequalities and crime. The news media discourse, thus reinforces and furthers the distance between a perceived ethnically Swedish “us” and racialized “Others”.
