Sammanfattning: In this study, atmospheric particle concentrations (PM10) and traffic noise levels havebeen measured close to the highways Lundbyleden (close to HjalmarBrantingsplatsen) and E45 (on the Stena Denmark’s terminal) in central Gothenburg.Two things have been studied. First, the effects a noise barrier next to the highwayhave on the particle concentration and noise level around the highway. Second, howtwo different kinds of blocks can affect the concentration and levels on theircourtyards. Three samples of 15 minutes were taken at each measurement point. Todo this measurement a portable measurement station has been built. A particlesensor (DustTrak), a microphone and a GPS-receiver have been connected to asingle-board computer (Raspberry Pi). The data have been collected and processed inthe single-board computer. Only three repeated measurements were performed at each place of measurement,so the result in this study should be seen as an indicator of how particle and noisedistributions might look. In this study a noise barrier lowers the particle concentration by 50 % directly behindthe barrier and has a lowering effect up to 40 meters from the barrier when the windcomes from the road. The barrier lowers the noise levels directly behind the barrierby 16 dBA for a new glass and concrete barrier and by 12 dBA for an old woodenbarrier. The noise level is lowered for more than 100 meters from the barrier. In this study an old completely surrounded courtyard is better protected, against bothparticles and noise, than a new noise protected courtyard with several openings.Concerning particles no difference could be seen between inside and outside of thenew noise protected courtyard. The old completely surrounded courtyard had,however, 20 % lower particle concentrations than on the outside, assuming typicalbackground and traffic emissions. Concerning noise levels, both courtyards loweredthe levels by 6-7 dBA, compared to outside of the courtyard. The new noiseprotected courtyard lowered the levels less close to the openings.
