Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study was to identify trends in modern single family homes that might have an impact on residential fires. The study compared older homes with modern ones, starting from the 1960s and on to the 2000s. The fire service development during the same period was analyzed to see how their capacity to handle these fires have changed. The conclusions of this study were that many factors had changed that might increase the severity of a fire in a modern single family dwelling. The development of the fire service showed longer response times and fewer fire stations in the country. Modern equipment and tactics may balance this a bit, but the nature of a fire clearly shows the importance of a rapid response. This study may serve as an introduction to the many factors affecting home fires and firefighter operations but because of the complexity of the subject more research is needed to draw any final conclusions.
