Sammanfattning: There have been several accounts of suicide attacks in the last few years; and although male attackers outnumber female attackers, the number of female suicide bombers has been on the rise. This thesis analyzes the motivation of Muslim female suicide bombers using Durkheim’s theory on suicide and society. Interviews with experts on suicide and radicalization were conducted to provide a perspective that enriches the literature review and the statistical analysis. Drawing on Durkheim’s theory on suicide I argue that radical Muslims view perceived pious femininity as less important than martyrdom and therefore have a different set of norms for women than men.
