Sammanfattning: The right- left dimension is stronger in Sweden than in in most European countries, demonstrated by the distinct bloc division in Swedish politics. However, the political landscape is changing and new tendencies has been pointed out for Swedish municipalities. The amount of municipal executive committees with parties from both political blocs has steadily increased during the last legislative terms. The right wing party the Sweden Democrats, has been discussed as an explanation for the new landscape, but cannot be the only affecting variable. Therefore, this thesis examines which policy aspects that accounts for mixed bloc coalitions in Swedish municipal executive committees. The classic policy seeking coalition theories meaning that policy dimensions explains coalition formation, is the study’s theoretical base. Thus, the distance between the blocs on the alternative policy dimension GAL-TAN is used to verify the theory. To examine the Sweden Democrats’ bearing on coalition outcomes the theory about pariah parties is also used by measuring distance between them and the mainstream right bloc, in different policy aspects. Six hypothesis are tested through logistic regression on data from the KOLFU17-survey. The result shows that the GAL-TAN dimension does not affect local coalition formation. Whereas the pariah theory partly is backed up, yet to a small extent. The Sweden Democrats although seems to influence local coalition outcomes.
