Sammanfattning: Foreign aid has becoming an increasingly common method for strengthening democratic processes and institutions in developing countries (Carothers, 2015). However, scholars disagree on the success of aid and highlights various aspects that are important for a positive outcome of aid. Despite the large selection of aid donors and large donations, Tanzania is one of the countries where democratic backlash is a great issue (Ewald, 2011). The purpose of the study is to analyse two aid projects from two different organizations in Tanzania in order to create a greater knowledge of the role of aid organizations. By looking for similarities and differences between donor organizations, the thesis aims to identify factors that are crucial to the outcome of aid. This has been developed through a qualitative comparative case study. The selected organizations have been compared to the established theories in the field based on previous aid research. The work focus on the organizations ActionAid and Twaweza's operations in Tanzania with emphasis on the implementation of aid projects. One of the conclusions presented by the thesis is the importance of starting from realistic goals and local needs when implementing the aid project. The fact that Twaweza has a larger budget, longer strategy period and more ambitious agenda gives organizations a good basis to affect Tanzania's level of democracy. ActionAid has a smaller budget and is based on local needs, which does not create the same conditions for affecting the level of democracy, but the projects they undertake are therefore more likely to succeed.
