Sammanfattning: Student councils have been present in Swedish schools for decades and is believed to generally be a good way for students to practice democracy in a protective environment. There seems however to be an unproblematic view on the matter and if theses councils actually portray a true democratic procedure that is meaningful for the students and productive in increasing the well being of the school. The purpose is to study student participation and school democracy from a democratic perspective to see what kind of influence students have and which democratic challenges this brings. This is done though the studying of local school documents about student councils and how they regulate how the student council is ruled. To complement this interviews from former student council members was done to give a student perspective on the matter. The results show that these documents fluctuate very much in content and detail and therefor shows a very unspecific definition on what kind of influence student have in schools and with it brings some challenges to the table on how to make them a valuable asset to a student’s life and development into a democratic citizen.
