”Visa mig hur du bygger och jag ska säga dig vem du är”: en analys över 1500-talets högstatusbyggnader och dess val av positionering längs Malmös medeltida huvudgata
Sammanfattning: It is my belief that one must understand a city’s history to understand its present. A town should be seen as an ongoing process, and its streets, blocks and architecture is to be seen as important actor in the course of events. A building is in many ways an expression of personality and sociality, and each new resident is a major player in its development and appearance. The ongoing process. To understand the building in the present, one must understand its past. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the town of Malmo during the 1500s, by analysing some components that are left today: the architecture. The material consists of three randomly selected upper-class buildings from the 1500s. The house of Rosenvinge, Jörgen Kocks residence and the house of Thott. The premise of the thesis was that by using building-archaeological techniques and observations, historical maps –and sources regarding the resident’s social background, to gain a wider understanding of the buildings physical existence. Why did they choose to settle along the main street, and is it possible to answer the questions by studying the remaining buildings in relation to: the resident’s historical background, the house’s physical location, and the buildings remaining interior and exterior architectural features? The study has shown that it is possible to answer these types of questions by using building-archaeological observations, historical maps and sources, and by studying their architectural features. The end result shows different reasons for the resident’s choice of location. To broaden the end result and to gain a wider understanding for the upper-class as a whole the analytical material should be furtherly defined, and put in to perspective with the lower classes housing culture.
