Sammanfattning: Background: In Sweden, women have access to free abortion until the eighteenth week of pregnancy. If the interruption occurs in week 12+0 and up to week 21+6, it’s called a late termination of pregnancy. Pain relief was needed to achieve good care. Previous research has focused on women's experiences of late termination of pregnancy. Midwives need support to be able to support and strengthen women in the abortion process. Aim: To describe the experiences of midwives caring for women when in the event late termination of pregnancy. Method: A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Ten midwives were interviewed with semi-structured questions, the interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Result: Thirteen subcategories and four categories were designed. The midwives wanted to feel secure in their professional role and have the right conditions. Working with late interruptions was both mentally and physically demanding for the midwife as well as for the woman. The midwives felt the need for support at their workplace, partly by his colleagues and partly in the form of education. Conclusion: Caring for women in the event of late termination of pregnancy was stressful but rewarding. They were missing access to adequate pain relief. The midwives needed support in supporting and strengthening the women to achieve a good care relationship. Continuous venting with colleagues was requested so they did not bring the work home.
