Sammanfattning: Background: An unexpected difficult airway is a stressful and acute situation for many anesthesia nurses. The management of a difficult airway requires good teamwork and good communication in a multidisciplinary team. In the anesthesia nurse's profession, collaboration is a central part of everyday work. This places demands on the anesthesia nurse to clarify her own role in the team. Aim: To describe anesthesia nurses' experiences of teamwork at an unexpectedly difficult airway. Method: the study was conducted through a qualitative interview study with anesthesia nurses at two hospitals in Central Sweden. Collected data have been analyzed in accordance with Granheim and Lundman's analysis method for content analysis of unprocessed material. Results: The results showed that teamwork is crucial for the management of an unexpected difficult airway. The communication in the team, joint preparedness and competence are three categories that were compiled from anesthesia nurses' experiences and stories. Conclusion: Managing an unexpected difficult airway places great demands on experience and competence as well as collaborating in a multidisciplinary team.
