Sammanfattning: Bactiguard is a Swedish company within the field of medichal technology. The company has been very prosperous since it was founded in 2005 and was elected Årets MedTechföretag 2008 – MedTech Company of the year 2008. According to a definition by NUTEK, Bactiguard is still considered a minor company – despite high market value and international expansion. The summer of 2009 Bactiguard is auditing for an EC-certification, to facilitate CE-marking of their products. This involves transforming into a more process-oriented organisation. Process mapping is a method for describing a business process by focusing on the most important elements. It is a graphic description with arrows illustrating the connection between activities. Process mapping is therefore considered a valuable tool to visualize the overall picture of an organization’s processes. The purpose of the Master Thesis is to analyze how to map the processes of a fast growing smaller company by mapping Bactiguard’s processes, and to discuss whether a company like Bactiguard actually is in the need of process mapping or not. Acknowledged methods for process mapping have been studied, whereupon a modified method was designed. The project of mapping Bactiguard’s product development process was divided into three phases; introduction, mapping and closure. The introduction consisted prestudies of the company and prior process mappings. The mapping phase consisted gathering of data as well as sketching, editing and verifying the charts. Data was gathered through standardized interviews with process owners and by studying internal documents. The closing phase consisted of finalizing the maps in a folder and presenting it to Bactiguard. Forty-one charts were required to map the entire product development process at Bactiguard. The charts were designed in four levels and followed the structure main process-sub process-activity-work assignment . A figurative graphical design with logical numbering was made to illustrate the structure. Obstacles during the process mapping was related to the fact that the some of the processes were new to Bactiguard and therefore not yet thoroughly defined. Another obstacle was that Bactiguard is a relatively small company and was therefore challenging to map since the charts cannot be verified against several sources. The final analysis reached the conclusion that there are many reasons to perform a process mapping. The charts present an overall picture - which can generate motivation for employees when their role in the company is visualized. However, this requires that the charts actually are implemented within the company.
