Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Röda Korsets Högskola

Sammanfattning: BACKGROUND: Pain is the most common cause of visit in the emergency department. Pain is an individual and subjective experience, which makes it hard and complex to measure and evaluate. Pain assessment and pain management are of the utmost importance for both patients with acute and long-term pain. AIM: The aim of this study was to highlight challenges that nurses are facing with pain management in the emergency department. METHOD: A general literature study based on 14 scientific articles with qualitative and quantitative data, from searches in CINAHL and PubMed Central databases. RESULTS: Three categories were identified that could pose a challenge for nurses working in the emergency department, work environment related factors, patient related factors and nurse related factors. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows a lack of knowledge about pain, pain assessment and nursing care, among nurses. Lack of time, high workload, correct pain assessment and communication are part of the challenges that lead to inadequate pain management and leads to unnecessary suffering among patients. Increased knowledge of pain has shown to minimize the risk of patient suffering.
