Sammanfattning: The aim of this thesis is to by studies and analyses of the past, in this case an older real-catalog system used during the period 1930-1960 at the Folklore archive in Lund, learn and create understandings for the system used at the archive from 1991 to today, which is a text database system. By this create understandings of how an organisations history can affect and influence the present, and with that knowledge create development tracks for the future. The questions that are analysed and discussed are: • How has the current system used at the Folklore archive been influenced by the older real-catalog system? - How are the two systems structured? - What kind of archival material are registred in the systems? - How does archival material get available throught the systems? • How can the systematics used at the Folklore archive evolve for the future? The first question is examined with a method called path dependence analysis. This method is a part of temporal comparison (comparison over time) and is used to studie what significance independent factors, ie initial conditions, have for the outcome of later events. To give the study a time scale, which is essential in temporal comparisons, a theory, where the researcher look at and use the past as a tool to understand the present and throught that create propositions for the future, is used. The second theoretical perspective used, the action perspective, demonstrates what a system is and how it is created. In this perspective it is the working group of people and their actions, rather than technology, which determines how the systematics and the structure in an organisation is composed. The comparison of different factors, witch consists of the three part questions presented between the main questions above, over time on similarities and differences, shows that the current system has been influenced by the earlier. The connection shows especially in the material and in similar methods used to make the documents avalible. The other main question is discussed based on the result and analyses from the first question. From the lessons about the present that emerged after studying the past, the future challenges and problems are discussed. From this discussions, propositions about how the system can evolve for the future are presented. More search paths into the documents and more focus on providing the material in a more pedagogical way, are some suggestions for the future
