Sammanfattning: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how psychotherapists describe and understand their own frame breaks in their psychotherapeutic work. Six psychotherapists were interviewed using an explorative and narrative method. The psychotherapists were asked to give an example of a frame break. The data collected as stories were analyzed using a phenomenological and hermeneutical approach, whereas a psychoanalytical stance was used in the analyses of the narrative material. The conclusion established that the frame breaks of the psychotherapists are an inevitable part of the psychotherapeutic process. The focus on the psychotherapist’s behalf concerns the therapeutic relation and the inner frame breaks with regards to the patient. A leading cause of frame break is the lack of the containing function. The frame breaks have generated increased knowledge about the inner world of the patient. By the psychotherapist reflecting on his or her own framework, this will have a positive impact on the progress of the process and the patient’s development. In some instances within the data, there were metaframes involved in the psychotherapeutic frame breaks. These frame breaks were not reparable and therapies were discontinued.
