En vardag där hot och våld är normaliserat – Behandlingsassistenters hantering av hot och våld på SiS-hem
Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to explore treatment assistants' experiences of handling threats and violence in youth institutions. The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews with six different treatment assistants with experiences of working with youths on SiS (Statens institutionsstyrelse- hem). Our empirical material was analysed using both Michel Foucault's Theory on power as a relation and Arlie Russell Hochschild’s theory on emotional labor. The study found that the treatment assistants are affected by an everyday life of threats and violence, from the youths towards the staff, between the youths and from the staff towards the youths. The assistants described that violence and threats are partly due to the young people themselves, and their difficulty in regulatingtheir emotions and knowing how to deal with adversity. It also depends on the staff, who do not have enough training in how to handle violent situations and the youths. Lastly, the study found that the assistants described that staff need more training, clear guidelines, and a better working climate to reduce the threats and violence.
