Miljöfarliga ingredienser i solskyddsprodukter
Sammanfattning: The aim of the study was to perform a hazard assessment of ingredients in sunscreen products available on the Swedish market. Data was collected by documentation of all ingredients in 110 frequently occurring sunscreen products from 15 different brands and by a screening of four known databases for collection of hazard classifications of the ingredients. The study shows that 96 out of 347 ingredients pose a hazard to aquatic environments in various degrees. 19 % of the ingredients were classified as a very high hazard, 30 % as a high hazard, 22 % as a medium hazard, and 29 % as a low hazard. The cosmetic functions that are of very high concern for aquatic environments are UV filter, perfuming, emollient and masking ingredients. Paired t-test showed no statistic significant difference in average content of hazardous ingredients between ecologically labelled and conventional sunscreen products. However, there were on average more ingredients classified as a low and a high hazard in conventional products compared to ecolabelled. There were also more UV- filters classified as a low hazard in conventional sunscreen products. The hazard assessment showed that the ingredients of highest concern for aquatic environments are Ethylhexyl Triazone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Limonene, Magnesium Sulfate, Benzophenone-3, Benzyl Benzoate, BHT, Ceteareth-12 och Ceteareth-20. It is difficult to assess the risk these ingredients may pose to aquatic environments due to the lack of information about how much of each ingredient a sunscreen product consists of. This is information that companies do not share. There is a need for more investigations about the ecotoxicological effects of a lot of the ingredients in sunscreen products as well as biomonitoring of them. The lack of exposure data makes it especially crucial to apply the precautionary principle when assessing the hazard the ingredients may pose to aquatic environments.
