Sammanfattning: Using materials in preschool is nothing new, however, the preschool teachers' choice of material can result in different possibilities. The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper knowledge of preschool teachers' perceptions of using different materials in the work with chemistry in the preschool learning environment, to make visible the purposes behind the preschool teachers' choices. Our theoretical starting points are phenomenography as a methodological approach and the didactic model of scientific knowledge interests. The result is based on data collected using semi-structured interviews with 10 preschool teachers. The results of the study show that the preschool teachers' use of materials is varied in the work with chemistry in preschool and they have different purposes for their use. The results also show how preschool teachers view their role is of importance, for what purpose they have behind the choice of materials and how they choose to work with chemistry.  Based on this, conclusions are drawn that materials are used in different ways where educators have different purposes for this. Something that affects is how the educators see themselves and what role they take. The study shows that regardless of the purpose behind the teachers' use of materials, knowledge acquisition about chemistry can be experienced. The recommendations are to use materials that are available in the preschool learning environment. And that the interests of scientific knowledge can lead to an understanding that knowledge in the natural sciences can be experienced, based on different interests.
