"Why contribute to a society that wants you dead" - En netnografisk studie om hur personer som tillskriver sig att vara incels på ett internetforum åskådliggör sitt utanförskap och känslouttryck

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: Involuntary celibacy is often referred to with the term incel. Incels are well-known for their internet forums where they discuss this matter in private. Earlier studies have also shown that the incel community infact is rooted in misogyny but also focuses on immense self-hatred and a longing for death. Several sources have expressed a concern about the growing terror-threats from incels. Therefore the aim of this study is to examine how people who claim to be incels on the incel-forum incels.is express social exclusion, and identify the emotions they express about their inceldom. It is difficult to determine whether members on incel-forums truly are incels in reality, which is the reason why the members must be interpreted as people who claim to be incels. This subject has been examined through a netnographic method where data has been gathered from posts on the incel-forum incels.is. Four different theoretical frameworks have been applied in our analysis; Erving Goffman's theory about stigma, Albert Bandura’s concept of self-efficacy, Tajfel and Turners’ theory on social identity and lastly Cottee and Hayward’s perspective on terrorism as an ultimate purpose. The findings of this study have shown that incels experience exclusion from women who overlook them in their search for potential partners. Incels also lack a sense of belonging in society in general. This study has also proven that the inceldom can cause feelings of hopelessness and depression about this situation, and make these men consider suicide as an escape. The feeling of injustice and loneliness has furthermore created an immense anger towards society and a desire for revenge.
