Sammanfattning: 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The possibilities with the technology are according to today's science unlimited. Just a few year’s ago the 3D market exclusively addressed production companies, but are now also opening for consumers. The arrival of the 3D printer has not yet resulted in any changes to the existing law, but the question will, according to experts in 3D technology, to be discussed in the near future. The current copyright laws are imbued with the basic idea of separating copyright law from the personal life. This idea is that the starting point for the regulation of the right of individuals to make copies of copyright protected objects for their own private use, and is regulated in 12 § URL. The right to make copies for private use has with increasing digitisation of everything resulted in that the private life, through restrictions in the right to make copies, has grown a closer connection to the copyright law. If the legislature will need to change the current law, due to the 3D printer, depends on the 3D technology's impact on the consumer market. Another essential factor is how the 3D printing will affect current, and future, right holders. A profitable copying for consumers while a loss for rights holders, has been, and will probably continue, to be used as argument for future restrictions in right to produce copyright protected items for private use. Already in the current situation, the 3D printer potential use is limited by the law - particularly at the production of copies by means of an external actor. How future possibilities in the right to make copies and the connection between copyright and private life will look like in the future, remains to be seen.
