Sammanfattning: Credibility assessments pose a substantial challenge for asylum seekers claiming refugee status on the basis of sexual orientation. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Swedish Migration Court’s requirements for assessing the credibility of asylum seekers’ invoked sexual orientation. First, the criterions for credibility assessments according to the relevant sources of law are identified. Second, the Migration Court’s enforcement of these cri-terions is examined by looking at 58 cases from 2019. The single most im-portant criteria according to the investigation is the level of detail provided by the asylum seeker, and the applicant’s accounts of feelings of shame are especially considered by the Migration Court. The applicant’s cooperation with the agencies from an early stage is also decisive. Late applications and lies about the applicant’s own identity are rarely repaired. Finally, the risk of using standardised phrases which conceal the actual reasons for the assess-ments is discussed.
