On API Design and Usage in the Connected Car Ecosystem

Sammanfattning: Connected Cars (CC) represent oneof the most important trends in the automotiveindustry. Providers and consumers in the CCecosystem have their own goals, objectives, andexpectations. The CC initiative also brings newchallenges to both providers and consumers. Asthe CC bubble continues to inflate, it is thespeculative and multidisciplinary nature of theecosystem that makes the study of connectedvehicles timely and important. In this regard, thiswork considers what is known as API(Application Programming Interface) value chainto build a better understanding of the CCecosystem in terms of opportunities andchallenges. As research strategy, we utilise aqualitative case study where empirical evidencewas gathered by semi-structured interviews ofmajor stakeholders in the CC ecosystem. Theresults show that no common characterisation ofthe CC ecosystem exits and that different APIdesign and usage trade-offs exist depending on thestakeholder role within the API value chain.
