Sammanfattning: Implications of the whole - an examination of three public art works; Park Play, On site in Fridhem and Monument to Work The following thesis investigate three different public art works realized in Sweden during the 2000’s. These include "Park Lek" by Kerstin Bergendal, "På plats i Fridhem" by Astrid Göransson and "Arbetets Monument" by Alexandra Pirici. All three art works have been made possible in collaboration with the Public Art Agency. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the three different artworks relate to the different inherent spatial dimensions, materiality and since all three to a large degree consist of relational processes, their relation to the specific community that is addressed. The various works are examined individually and in relation to each other. To carry out the research a theoretical and methodological framwork has been set up. The theoretical framework is based on a combination of theories from five different theorists including Nicolas Bourriaud, Chantal Mouffe, Henri Lefebvre, Judith Butler and Miwon Kwon. The methodological framework consist of a combination of comparative analysis and critical discourse analysis. The investigation shows how the three different public art works are embedded in the political discourse of public space as well as how they challenge it. It is also shown how different dimensions of spatiality constitute as well as are constituted by the different art works. The thesis also makes visible the triangle of power: institution, artist and community that is at once the framework for making each artistic process possible as it constitute it’s boundaries.
