Sammanfattning: This study is a qualitative didactic study, the combination of a hermeneutic phenomenological approach and a qualitative oriented content analysis. The overall aim of the study is the contribution of knowledge of the mother tongue in the Swedish school. The more specific objectives: on the one hand to examine the intentions of mother tongue education for second language students both from the content of the policy document and based on the stories of the interviewed mother tongue teachers and on the other hand to look at the different framework factors that influence the subject. The main empirical study consists of interviews with mother tongue teachers. Study results show that both policy documents and mother tongue teachers' intentions of the subject is to strengthen students' native language, to contribute to the development of a second language and the development of the other school subjects. Moreover, the results indicate that mother tongue proficiency is considered to contribute to better understanding of the world outside, different languages and cultures, influence students’ identity and self-confidence in a positive way. The study results indicate a number of frame factors (heterogeneous student groups, teacher competence & curriculum, limited teaching time and schedule, attitudes, approaches & cooperation, lack of / inadequate educational facilities and teaching materials) that enable or limit the possibilities for mother tongue education in the Swedish school.  Based on the analysis and the conclusion it becomes obvious that the mother tongue education is downgraded in the school context.
