Sammanfattning: Background: Organ donation has enabled the possibilities to save lives and improve the quality of life for critically ill people. At present, it is uncommon that children are potential organ donors, this means that children are dying every year waiting for transplantation and lack of organs. Critical care nurses’ (CCN) profession includes supporting and interacting with the families who participate in the organ donation process. CCN’s rarely become secure and comfortable when it comes to organ donation process involving a child.Aim: The aim of this study is to illuminate CCN’s experiences of caring for a child who is a potential organ donor.Method: A qualitative study with seven semi-structured interviews was conducted with CCN’s at a general intensive care unit and a pediatric intensive care unit. A qualitative content analysis was performed. Results: The analysis resulted in three themes; Caring for the family as a whole, Contribute to a crucial decision and A challenging caring. The result shows that the family is an important part of the caring and that it is important to get them involved throughout the whole hospital stay. It is a complex form of care that requires education, knowledge and experience to guide the family through the organ donation process. CCN´s are in need of support and cooperation to be able to deliver good nursing and to not feel failure in terms of working within the organ donation process. Conclusion: Involving the parents of a child is essential for the CCN. Optimal would be if all critically ill children were nursed in a specialized intensive care unit for children, where all forms of care are adapted to the pediatric patient group. Research has shown that parents of children who die are at greater risk of mental illness, this reinforces the claim that the role of the CCN as a link in the care chain is of great importance. Since children rarely become organ donors it is difficult for the CCN to be secure in the assignment of the organ donation process.
