“Alphas vs. Betas” - Mäns kamp om makten över kvinnor : en diskursanalys av internetfenomenen “manosfären” och “incels” på Flashback
Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study has been to examine the subculture incels and to see how masculinity is represented and constructed by incels, how power is expressed within the community as well as to answer what they define as a “real man”. In order to examine and analyze the subculture, this study has used the Swedish online forum Flashback. The study was based on a discourse analysis of four different threads from Flashback from the main category "Residence, home & family" and the subcategory "Relationships & cohabitation". The theoretical framework for this study consists of Michel Foucault's theory of power (1982), Raewyn Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity (1987), and Terry Kuper's theory of toxic masculinity (2005). Based on the results, the study indicated that power roles, hegemonic masculinity and toxic masculinity have a negative impact on men through how they are expected to act and feel. Furthermore, the study shows how masculinity norms can lead to the development of abusive and depressive behavior among the followers of the subculture. The main conclusion of this study is that due to norms about masculinity in the society, there is an aspiration amongst men for a need to prove, defend and maintain their position within the masculinity hierarchy.
